Red wine: the one stain that really knows how to leave its mark. As with most household stains, the sooner you act the better. If you can start removing the stain before it fully sets into the carpet, you’ll have a better shot at getting rid of it.

Spills are unavoidable, but knowing the right steps to take can help you quickly remove stains, leaving your carpet spotless. Check out these five steps to removing pesky red wine stains.

1. Test carpet

With any cleaner, you should always test a small area for color safeness, such as a closet or hidden corner. Moisten a towel with vinegar and apply to the carpet. Let it sit for a few minutes before blotting it up. Check back to inspect fading or changes in the texture of the carpet.

2. Saturate the stain

Once you’ve tested the carpet, saturate the stained area with our Press-It dye remover. It’s best to apply the dye remover directly to the wine stain and press into the fibers of the carpet. The product will begin to soak into the stain, allowing it to start lifting from the fibers of the carpet.

3. Cover and apply steam

After saturating the wine stain, cover it with a white cotton towel or paper towel and apply steam. This can be done with a steam iron, wallpaper steamer, or equivalent. You’ll want to continue pressing the towel into the wine stain for about 15-20 seconds. Observe the unwanted color transfer to the towel. It’s important to keep the spot saturated during transfers.

4. Press until dye is removed

After you’ve covered the wine stain with a towel and applied steam, move to a clean area of the towel. Each time, press until the dye is completely removed or the transfer stops.

5. Blot dry and vacuum

The last step to removing a wine stain is to flush out the stain with water and blot dry. You want to avoid scrubbing or moving back and forth as this could spread the stain into other areas of the carpet. Now, prepare a baking soda paste by mixing a three-to-one ratio of water to baking soda, and apply it to the affected area. Once the paste is dry, vacuum the stain.
